July 31, 2013 – Dawn of the Donut had a soft opening prior to their grand opening to be held on Friday August 2, 2013. This zombie-themed donut shop is located on 3402 North Division in Spokane. Customers were able to purchase deep fried confections inspired by the undead including coffin shaped donuts with maple glaze.
Owner Marty Judnich came to Spokane from Montana about a year ago. He wanted to start a donut shop that would not only serve great donuts but have an additional attraction. Dawn of the Donut is decked out in everything zombie. Ceiling tiles are splattered with blood, the walls are hung with zombie movie posters and his confections are creepy as well. The display case boasts “Brain” – an apple fritter with raspberry glaze that accurately resembles a zombie’s favorite food.
Judnich’s target market is whomever likes zombies and donuts which he concedes is nearly everyone in Spokane. The line out the door was evidence of the popularity of donuts in the Inland Northwest.
I wanted Spokane to have a really great donut shop that serves excellent donuts and has a great atmosphere as well. It’s not a hole-in-the-wall. This is sort of an event. (Marty Judnich)
Father and daughter Bob and Stephanie Haskins found out about Dawn of the Donut on Twitter. This soft opening was fueled by a social networking buzz that included a Facebook page and a Twitter feed. Bob enjoyed a maple bar covered in crumbled bacon that was so packed with bacon it dropped big chunks on the parking lot. It was shameful. Stephanie enjoyed the a coffin donut stuffed with raspberry filling.
I am a bigger fan of donuts than zombies. The donuts are pretty good! I definitely recommend them. (Stephanie Haskins)
Dawn of the Donut will be open on this Friday. Large crowds are expected. Rumor has it that the Spokane Fire Marshall visited earlier in the week to ensure that Dawn of the Donut will not exceed its maximum occupancy. Don’t be scared off by the long lines or the zombies – the donuts are worth the wait.
